Have I seen ‘Oz The Great and Powerful‘ yet? Well no. It doesn’t come out in theaters until March 8th. But you can bet I’m planning on it. After watching the trailer and the Sunday Game Day sneak peek (scroll to bottom of this article to see them), reading about the movie and checking out all of the pictures I can get my hands on, I am so ready for this movie. Here are my 7 reasons why…
7 Reasons ‘Oz the Great and Powerful’ Is a Must See
1. There’s a wicked witch. Actually, there are two.
I’ve always been intrigued by the wicked witch from The Wizard of Oz story. I remember listening to the story on my little record player. The story had that wicked witch laugh that just gets you. In the trailer, all we see is her hand and her nails. But on Game Day (Super Bowl Sunday), right after the sneak peek, the wicked witch is taking over the Disney.com homepage. There is the Wicked Witch of the East and the Wicked Witch of the West.
2. The cast.
I’m pretty excited about the cast. Now, I’m a James Franco fan anyway, so this was an easy sell for me. The cast includes James Franco, Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz, Michelle Williams and Zach Braff. There’s also a monkey. I also love monkeys. Here are the newly released character posters and a description of each.
Meet Glinda: Benevolent, compassionate, and above all — good.
Meet Theodora: Beautiful, naive, and hopeful for the arrival of the great and powerful wizard.
Meet Oscar Diggs: A small-time magician with questionable ethics arrives in a land and must decide if he will be a good man or a great one.
Meet Evanora: Royal advisor, Emerald City protector, and a witch to be feared.
3. The director.
Two words: Sam Raimi. He’s the one behind the Spider Man Trilogy.
4. Seeing the Land of Oz in a whole new way.
When I was a kid, Oz was this magical place I so desperately wanted to visit. Pictures like this one below sucked me into the world of Oz. I would have given up my favorite stuffed animal for my own pair of magical red slippers.
And now we have pictures of Oz like this…
5. Learning more about the wizard, who’s not really so magical. Or is he?
If you’re familiar with The Wizard of Oz story, you know about the guy behind the curtain. This…
Was actually this….
The Wizard had everyone fooled.
In Oz the Great and Powerful, Oscar Diggs is a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics. When he ends up in the Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot – until he meets the three witches that is. They are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. So what does he do? He puts his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry. The story line continues saying that Oscar turns himself into not only a better wizard, but a better man.
6. The 1985 film Return to Oz bombed.
Return to Oz was the “unofficial” sequel to the 1939 Wizard of Oz film. It did not do good with audiences. I’m anxious to see what they do with this one to make it a gazillion times better.
7. The chance to see L. Frank Baum’s wizard come to life in modern day and the original Wizard of Oz references.
There were 15 Oz books (I believe) written by L. Frank Baum. Director Sam Raini said in an interview, that script writer Mitchell Kapner pulls ideas about the wizard from the books, but the film will also “nod lovingly” to the original Wizard of Oz movie from 1939.
Oz The Great and Powerful arrives in theaters March 8,2013. Enjoy the trailer, as well as a game day sneak peek below.
