This is a series on ToyXplosion called ‘Bite-Sized Parenting’ which we will bring to you every Wednesday. We’re a day late this week! We’ll blame it on our recent vacation.
Note to Self: Less Talking, More Listening by Todd Bonner
I’ve been at this parenting gig for almost 15 years now. Looking back, the one thing that I can see most clearly is my tendency to talk the issue (and the kid) to death.
It is often at my most frustrated points that I decide more words will fix the problem. Obviously, the problem is that my child just doesn’t understand why what they are doing is wrong, right?
So more words should equal greater understanding, leading to perfect behavior. If only.
In hindsight, I realize I need to rely far more on using the right questions instead of constructing the right “lecture”. Then, I need to zip it.
As parents, I think we need to get better at listening: to our gut that is telling us to be quiet and to our kids who need to be heard.
