If you have a child in Algebra or about to take the subject, you know how daunting the subject can be. We currently have two kids in Algebra and it is definitely their toughest subject as of now. Did you know that proficiency in Algebra can make a difference when it comes to getting accepted and doing well in college? It also has an affect on how well they will do in their future careers. Needless to say, Algebra is important.
The Sylvan Learning “Fit 4 Algebra” Free Screener
Our 7th grader, Josiah, took the Sylvan Algebra Free Screener “Fit 4 Algebra“. The test was multiple choice and all he needed was a pencil and scratch paper. It took him about 15 minutes to complete and at the end, it presented us with the results. The test results showed us his Overall Fitness and gave us a breakdown on what he is strong in, moderate in and what he needs to build in.
What the Screener Showed Me
As a full-time working parent, I sometimes feel a little distant as to what my child is learning and what they need help in. That’s my fault and definitely something I need to work on. Having Josiah take this test gave me an insight as to how well his knowledge in the important subject of Algebra is. It’s good to see what he’s excelling in and what he could use some extra help in. I would definitely recommend other parents have their children take this quick test to give them an idea of where they’re at. Your can sign up your children here to have them take the free test.
Why Is Algebra So Important?
According to Sylvan: “A critical gateway subject, algebra is the foundation for higher-level mathematics and science courses in high-school, which in turn can open doors for college and lead to better careers and lifetime earning potential.”
Algebra isn’t just about numbers. It’s about solving problems, it’s about critical thinking and it’s about starting with a problem and taking it to the end to solve it. I want our kids to go to any college they want. I want as many doors to open for them as possible and that must start with a good foundation of learning.
Some Facts About Algebra, Parents and Students
Did you know that 41% children admit that their algebra work makes them more nervous than the intimidating task of asking someone out on a date! I truly believe this. When our children come to me with Algebra help, I swear my heart starts racing.
Although parents understand the importance of Algebra, they admit to not always being able to give their kids the help they need and that outside help is necessary to help them succeed. Here’s an interesting chart which shows Algebra tops the list of worries for many parents across the country.
This study conducted by Sylvan, also shows that 97 percent of the students who felt they needed improvement on Algebra said “If Only I Knew”. Meaning if only they knew one-on-one tutoring was available (49%). Or, if only they knew ahead of time this subject was going to give them so much trouble (18%).
If your child is struggling in Algebra, look at the options you have. Giving them a good foundation with Algebra will take them farther in life than we probably can even wrap our heads around. Take the first step and have them take the Fit 4 Algebra screener. See where their strengths are and where their weaknesses are. At least if it looks like they need outside help, you’ll know and can take the next step to get them some.
