I just read the most interesting article at CNN and it’s all about parents using smartphones to entertain their kids in public places when they get bored. You see, when our kids were younger and we were planning on going to a restaurant or somewhere they would have to sit quietly, the diaper bag was stuffed with toys, books, crayons… anything to keep them occupied.
Well, times have changed. Now we have awesome technology that fits in a small purse or your pocket.
Almost half of the top 100-selling apps in the iTunes App Store were for preschool or elementary-aged children in November 2009, according to a content analysis by the Joan Ganz Cooney Center, which promotes digital media technologies to advance children’s learning.
Have you seen the AT&T commercial with Luke Wilson helping out a dad whose kid starts screaming as soon as mom leaves the table? They get it. Smartphones and all of those apps, are great entertainment for kids and parents are using them more and more.
Just last night we were at dinner and our son got out his iPod Touch (which he bought with his own hard-earned money) to entertain the kids at the table and they loved it. Not only are parent using smartphones at restaurants, but on the subway, at the grocery store, etc.
What do you think about these changing times and parents using technology for some kid-friendly entertainment? We would love to hear your thoughts on this!
